It wasn’t long ago that it was announced Roberto Orci was no longer directing Star Trek 3, and just as quickly it’s being reported that Justin Lin is now directing!
For those not familiar with Lin’s recent films, he found success reinvigorating the Fast and the Furious franchise to spectacular box office rewards. Taking over from the Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drive, Lin went on to direct the next three Fast and Furious films, as well as a few other projects in between including some episodes of Community.
It had previously been announced that Lin was attached to the untitled new Bourne film that would continue the story of Aaron Cross portrayed by Jeremy Renner, however with renewed interest by Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass, any Renner centric sequels seems to be on hold for now. Other rumours included Lin returning to the Fast and Furious franchise for a final wrap up film to close the book on those characters.
Without any of that underway just yet, and a tight timeframe for getting Star Trek 3 to completion in order to meet its planned 50th anniversary release window of 2016, Lin seems like a solid choice. Roberto Orci of course is still on board in a producing/writing role.
