Star Trek 3 appears to have secured a director, with JJ Abrams attached to Star Wars it’s long been known that Paramount were on the hunt for a replacement.
Reports indicate that Roberto Orci has been formally selected to take on directing duties for the new Trek film.
Orci has been making a name for himself in recent years primary in writing/producer roles, his works have included Star Trek, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Amazing Spiderman 2, Cowboys and Aliens, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Mission Impossible 3, The Island, and he’s heavily involved in the upcoming Spiderman cinematic universe with being attached to both a Venom film and Amazing Spiderman 3.
What’s interesting about this choice however is that Orci has never directed a feature film, and Star Trek 3 is quite the big production for a director’s debut feature. Obviously Orci has worked closely with JJ Abrams on a number of projects and was heavily involved with the modern Star Trek series to date, these factors have likely helped get him across the line alongside an experienced cast and crew that have already made two of these films.
There’s no escaping the fact however that Orci is somewhat a polarizing creative talent, his previous works have produced mixed results. This time around he’s not partnering with his long time collaborator Alex Kurtzman, so we may see a slightly different style of writing from Orci. Star Trek 3 isn’t going to be released for another year or so though so we’re going to have to wait a while to see how this turns out.
