The Mummy is a reboot of the series starring Brendan Fraser which began in 1999, which of course was a reboot/inspired by take on the 1932 classic starring Boris Karloff.
With the Fraser starring series wrapping up in 2008 with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the franchise has been meandering along towards its restart currently scheduled for April 2016.
Andres Muschietti, director of the film starring Jessica Chastain ‘Mama’, was attached to the new Mummy film which includes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as producers. Muschietti it seems has left the project however stating that creative differences on the direction of the film are the cause of his departure.
With the release date less than two years off Universal will be on the hunt for a new director, Jon Spaihts the original writer on the film Prometheus is also attached to the project, which is intended to spearhead the return of Universal’s classic monsters, with a reimagining that would see the film set in the modern era.
