Sony continues to play in the Spiderman universe with their new film Venom coming out on Australian screens from 4th October, directed by Ruben Fleischer who previously gave us Zombieland.
Venom stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, from the comics the Venom character is a sentient alien symbiote, which bonds with a host – one of the most notable hosts in comics history is Eddie (the alien’s second host after Peter Parker).
In any event, if the film goes well Sony has things covered, Hardy has confirmed via interview that he’s signed on for a total of three Venom films, no doubt the studio will be waiting on the box office, and critical reception before announcing any plans formally, but nice to know it’s lead actor is ready to go should things continue.
Following Venom Fleischer looks to be quickly moving into production on a sequel to Zombieland, which is scheduled for a release in late 2019. His involvement on any Venom sequel may have to wait a short while for his schedule to open up.
The Venom/Eddie Brock combination character appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 3 back in 2007 to mixed reception (and reportedly largely against Raimi’s will), it’ll be interesting to see how Hardy and Fleischer’s take on the character compares, at least he’ll certainly have more screen time than Topher Grace had to work with in 2007.
