It’s happening! Veronica Mars is returning with a new season, a limited run of 8 new episodes will appear on Hulu featuring Kristen Bell and with series creator Rob Thomas involved once again.
The official press release for the revival series gives a short synopsis about the new episodes, indicating that there will be a central mystery running over the entire season, with the 8 episodes all connected to tell the overall story. See below:
Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.
Further to the above, Rob Thomas had the following to add via his twitter account:
I will say this: the movie was nostalgic. The Hulu limited series isn’t going to be. Hardcore So-Cal noir. One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show.
So while there might be other returning cast members for the new episodes, it doesn’t sound like the intent is to get caught up revisiting all the previous characters again. Rob Thomas has previously said the film was designed to do that, but new content would take the story forwards.
Veronica Mars originally aired on the CW way back in 2004 to 2007 with three seasons, since then the film was released in 2014, largely enabled by crowd funding via kickstarter with fans putting in for the production budget, and the studio picking up the marketing and distribution costs.
Things were quiet in the last few years on the Veronica front, however both Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell have been busy with projects like iZombie, and The Good Place. Whenever asked they both speak fondly of Veronica Mars, so it’s no surprise that this new content has finally fallen into place.
