The DC Extended Universe has Aquaman just around the corner for this December, and we recently saw the release of the Shazam! trailer starring Zach Levi. There have been a few changes elsewhere in the slate of films making up this franchise, starting with another delay in the Flash standalone film.
Ezra Miller’s Flash was last on screen in Justice League, the production start date on a standalone Flash film has been pushed back from early 2019 to late 2019, now tentatively scheduled for a 2021 release. It’s not the first time the film has been delayed, Miller’s casting as the big screen Barry Allen was originally announced back in 2014, and it’s reaching the point with all the uncertainty surrounding these films, if a solo Flash film doesn’t eventuate with Miller at all, it probably wouldn’t be much of a surprise.
Further to Flash delays, it’s also been reported that Henry Cavill is unlikely to continue in the role of Superman. It is speculated that a Superman cameo in the Shazam! film is now off the table, and that any plans for another solo Superman film are now on hold indefinitely. The uncertainty of Cavill’s future involvement is in additional to Ben Affleck’s likely departure from the franchise, creating the need for some significant re-casting of these characters if this incarnation of the franchise is to continue.
That said it’s not as though there aren’t a number of other projects still in the works, including a Joker film, more Suicide Squad, a Supergirl film, and director Chris McKay has recently commented on twitter that his Nightwing film is still in the works. It’s been almost two years since that project was announced to be in development, and while there have been no casting announcements, McKay has previously stated that a first draft of the screenplay has been completed.
The DC extended universe continues to be a volatile beast, we’ll have to wait and see what happens after these next couple of releases.
