Katy Perry: Part of Me – The movie is a backstage pass, front row seat and intimate look at the fun, glamorous, heartbreaking, inspiring, crazy, magical, passionate, and honest mad diary of Katy both on and off the stage.
As I sit here listening to Katy Perry song’s looking for inspiration, Katy’s road to stardom you might think was an easy ride but after watching ‘Katy Perry: Party of Me’ you may need to think again. The documentary follows her throughout the California Dreams Tour of 124 shows and over 11months on the road it also features a whole bunch of footage from her younger days, including some personal video diaries and her christian upbringing, there are also some emotionally charged moments around the demise of her relationship with comedian Russell Brand.
Growing up a preachers daughter is something you wouldn’t think when seeing Katy Perry in such video clips as ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and ‘California Gurls’ but her parents are traveling preachers and she grew up singing gospel songs. Katy didn’t even know Michael Jackson existed until her teenage years but it was an Alanis Morrisette song that made Katy take her own path and start singing the songs she wanted to which also included her packing up at 18 and moving to Los Angeles. Katy takes us for a trip down memory lane in the documentary seeing homemade footage of herself talking about her dreams and photo’s as she embarked on a really a journey of self discovery after moving out of the family home.
The documentary is nicely broken up throughout with footage from her concerts so expect to sing along to all of her biggest hits including a bunch of cameo’s of her famous friends including Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Shannon Woodward. It’s also great to see how involved Katy is with the creative side of things from her costumes (yes she was the one that wanted her boobs to spin on her costumes) to where the cloud should be placed on the big screen next to her stage. Katy also shows how hard she worked at her marriage with Russell Brand jumping onto planes between shows to go see him, I will admit that part of the documentary is extremely one sided as, well Katy is a producer on the film.
Even though you get to see all the high’s in Katy Perry’s career she also lets you see her at her lowest which is extremely prominent in the film when the tour hits Brazil you see Katy basically hit her emotional breaking point which was basically her break up with Russell Brand before a concert (spoilers ahead) where she can’t even bring herself to start getting her make up done she just continues to break down over and over again until her manager suggests to push the start time back 30 minutes. Katy realizes she won’t be able to do her ‘Meet and Greet’ so pulls herself together for a short amount of time but as soon as that’s done she breaks down again which continues until about 10seconds before hitting the stage she musters up a smile and the show goes on (spoilers end). The whole sequence goes for about 15minutes but sitting in the cinema I could hear everyone around me grabbing tissues and crying along with her and to get honest with you I was pretty close as well.
In all the documentary is extremely well done and I did really enjoy seeing how she started off to where she is now, it is a rather incredible story and if Katy really wanted to she could have made the entire film a positive promotional piece but with the sequences in Brazil and what followed after I really take my hat off to her for being… honest.
Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D is in Cinemas now I give this film 8 out of 10 stars.
