Obi-wan to return?

Obi-wan to return?

2019 has been a year of announcements for Disney+, the streaming service which is set to launch later this year on November 12. Many of these announcements have been related to Marvel projects, as that property moves beyond its phase 3 and the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, with phase 4 seeming to be more of a mixture of films and TV projects.

It’s not all been Marvel related however, with the Star Wars show ‘The Mandalorian’ also launching on the service when it opens for business in November, however now it appears another Star Wars project might also be heading for the service.

None other than fan favorite Ewan McGregor is reportedly in talks to return to the role of Obiwan Kenobi for a Disney+ series. An Obi-wan film has long been speculated about, with a number of rumors surfacing over recent years, particularly with one off films such as Rogue One, and Solo being released into cinemas. It appears however that Disney has shifted gears on the Star Wars standalone films now looking at TV properties to deliver some of these stories, while the films are focused on delivering a final Skywalker saga film, which is then to be followed up by a new trilogy a few years down the track.

Back to Obi-wan however, no details have been announced and there’s little info available in terms of McGregor’s level of commitment to the show in terms of numbers of episodes or seasons, in fact him signing on for the show could still not eventuate. But it’s fun to speculate in the meantime on where such a show might go, exploring the period of time between Episodes III and IV however does seem the most likely with plenty of material to explore over that 20 year period.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
