The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony, were presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today, to award the best films of 2019. South Korean film PARASITE (directed by Bong Joon-ho) took out the Oscar for Best Picture, the first foreign language film to achieve this. Before awards season began, PARASITE was not even thought of as an outsider, however as the weeks passed it won accolades from numerous film festivals such as AACTA, BAFTA, Cannes, The Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America to name some of the more prominent awards. So far, the film has taken home more than 100 awards since mid-2019
Sam Mendes’ war movie 1917 had collected several awards including the Golden Globes and from the Directors Guild. It was widely tipped to take home the Best Picture Oscar, but instead received three technical awards.
For the second year in a row, the ceremony did not have a host, although some felt that comedians Chris Rock and Steve Martin acted as substitutes and this was one of the targets of their presentation. As Martin said, “We have both hosted the Oscars before and this is such an incredible demotion.”
The audience was at first confused by the appearance of Eminem singing his 2003 Oscar-winner Lose Yourself from the movie 8 MILE. By the end of the performance he was given a standing ovation. At the time of his winning, he had refused to perform the song because it would have been censored for broadcast. Some censoring still occurred, but apparently, Eminem has accepted this. Or as the man himself explained on Twitter “”Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity… Thanks for having me @The Academy,” he wrote, “Sorry it took me 18 years to get here.”
Best Actor went to Joaquin Phoenix for JOKER. Best Actress was Renée Zellweger for her portrayal of Judy Garland in JUDY. Best Supporting Actor went to Brad Pitt for ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD and Best Supporting Actress was Laura Dern for MARRIAGE STORY.
Dern’s Oscar was one of the few bright spots for Netflix who dominated with 24 nominations, but only received two wins (The other being AMERICAN FACTORY, a documentary about an Ohio plant reopened by a Chinese billionaire, won Best Feature Documentary.) Netflix received multiple awards in 2019 and reportedly spent millions making prestige movies in the past year, following that up with millions in publicity campaigns.
Despite Netflix’s campaigning not going to plan, the future of the Academy Awards will involve more and more content from streaming services and if this year is any guide, the Oscars look set to transform into something different as it approaches it’s 100th anniversary. Perhaps PARASITE is a pointer to the awards becoming truly global.
