Third Tron Film on the way?

Twenty eight years is the length of time separating the original ‘TRON’ film and the recent sequel ‘TRON: Legacy’. With progress on a new film already underway it’s looking like fans won’t have to wait nearly as long for the next instalment.

The annual pop culture convention held in San Francisco, ‘Wondercon’ has just concluded for 2012 with lots of news coming out about current comic and film projects that are underway. Writing team Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz were at the convention promoting the show ‘Once Upon a Time’. The pair have worked on a number of projects including the ill fated ‘Birds of Prey’ TV series, as well as ‘Felicity’, ‘Lost’, ‘Once Upon a Time’ and of course ‘Tron: Legacy’.

Horowitz has been quoted as saying they are currently working on a sequel to ‘Tron: Legacy’, however due to their current commitments they won’t be writing the sequel and will be involved as co-producers. A script is reportedly being written by Dave DiGilio who has worked on the 2007 TV series ‘Traveller’, with a first draft already having been completed.

There were a few more comments about possible cast members, though due to the potential spoilers for ‘Tron: Legacy’ in those comments I won’t go into them just yet.

It is interesting to seeing some movement on another Tron film relatively quickly, while having a script is a long way from having a funded green lit project the last film did receive mixed reviews from critics. While visually spectacular the film didn’t quite deliver on the story and the performances as it could have with several compelling plot elements being mostly glazed over.

That said though the film was a financial success with strong theatrical numbers worldwide. The next Tron film is likely to still be a number of years away however without an official green light and only being in the very early stages of pre-production, let’s just hope it doesn’t blow out to another 28 year gap!

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
