Darran’s Top 10 Films of 2011

Darran’s Top 10 Films of 2011

Well it’s that time again, when we all sit down and reflect on the year that was 2011. Our Top Ten Film Lists of the year have been rather popular over the past 2 years and its a rather enjoyable experience and sometimes a somewhat frustrating one. I will also be including some notable mentions and few of the worst films of the Year. So have a read and enjoy! Don’t forget to let us know what you think via the comments below or on our facebook. You can also check out Phil’s List which he posted a couple of days ago.

10 – The Adjustment Bureau

The trailer for this film was incredible (I think the music they used really helped with that fact) and from there I just really needed to see this movie. With a cast including Matt Damon with Emily Blunt and a story line about making choices and fate I was just really impressed with the whole film in general, if you haven’t seen The Adjustment Bureau it’s a must see, check out the sensational trailer below.

9 – Biutiful

This film was an incredibly hard watch, but the outstanding performance by Javier Bardem just blew me away which is partly why this film was entered into my top ten at number nine. The story itself was incredibly powerful and just pulled every emotion.

8 – Thor

The God of Thunder reigns supreme with Marvel smashing it with THOR with Chris Hemsworth in the title role and Tom Hiddleston playing the God of Mischief Loki, who was also one of my favorite interviews this year I should also add Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin you really can’t go wrong. I know this film was panned by some critics but as far as I’m concerned if you didn’t enjoy this film you have issues.

7 – Attack The Block

This is the dark horse of the year, this low budget alien sci-fi film was under nearly everyones radar and to be honest with you came out way to quietly here more people should have been aware and seen it. The movie centres around a bunch of kids who live in ‘The Block’ in London and as the title says Aliens attack and they have to defend their home. This movie is so much fun, has witty dialog and at some points rather hilarious! A must see!

6 – The Hunter

Willem Dafoe stars in a film about the hunt for the Tasmanian Tiger, the cinematography on this film is just incredible. Willem does an amazing job in the title role and the supporting actors were cast extremely well. As far as sequences go, there’s a few in this film that just proves that there is still some incredibly talented film makers out there.

5 – The Ides of March

Political drama’s never really interest me too much, but this film had one of the most impressive casts of the year including Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Philip Seymour Hoffman and George Clooney who also wrote and directed the film. It’s just an intense film that is dialog driven and extremely well written as I said in my review ‘A Strong Contender for my Top Ten List’ and that’s why it comes in at number 5.

4 – War Horse

Spielberg once again blows my mind with his latest film War Horse a damn amazing film, beautifully shot, well written and some of the most impressive battle scenes on screen. This film was so close to the top two but unfortunately it didn’t quite get there.

3 – Super 8

I think nostalgia kicked in when I sat down to watch Super 8 it just had the feel of ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Stand By Me’ and just took me back to those old classic films about a bunch of kids on an adventure! JJ Abram’s seems to know exactly what I like in a film and seems to nail it with pretty much every outing, even the trailer seems to pull you in.

2 – Warrior

My number Two spot goes to the film Warrior starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte this incredible film about family and fighting nearly hit my number one spot. The fact that this movie was a major flop still boggles me it’s hard to see how some films make millions but are absolutely terrible – such as Johnny English Reborn. Do yourself a favor let’s give this film some money with DVD/Blu Ray sales, go buy it you won’t be disappointed.

1 – Drive

Even though some woman in America took the film studio to court over a misleading trailer, the movie DRIVE is my favorite film of the year and with absolutely no doubt deserves the number one spot. Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, Albert Brooks and Bryan Cranston give some of the best performances of the year while I take my hat off to Director Nicolas Winding Refn for the way he shoots his films and writes incredible dialog or well in this case a lack of. Now most readers of my reviews would know I’m a sucker for a film score but in this case Refn manages to mix electronic music with an amazing score.

Notable Mentions

Red State, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, Puss in Boots, Melancholia, Final Destination 5, Water for Elephants, Paul, Battle: Los Angeles, Captain America: The First Avenger.

Worst Films of 2011

In no particular order.

Johnny English Reborn – I still don’t think ill ever get those 100 or so minutes back
Jack and Jill – I’m a huge fan of Adam Sandler but seriously..
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – I keep getting told to read the books, sorry it’s never going to happen
In Time – Amazing premise but stupid movie can’t say much more.
ZooKeeper – Kevin James …….
Sucker Punch – Expected something totally different but instead a mix of soft core porn and a really bad script.
Hop – High hopes dashed after watching this film, I love a nice live action mixed with animation but this one failed after the 30minute mark.
Gnomeo and Juliet – The title says it all.

To finish off, I have already seen a few of the films coming out next year – The Muppets, Hugo, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Like Crazy are all sensational films, my reviews will be coming very soon but already I expect a few of them to be in my 2012 list.
