‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ was something of an unexpected success during 2011. Overshadowed by the various hyped block buster releases including ‘Cowboys and Aliens’, ‘Captain America’, and ‘Transformers 3’, the new apes film quietly made it’s way into theatres where it generated worldwide revenues of approximately $482 million and found generally positive reviews among critics. Given the nature of the franchise it was to be expected that the ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ would bring with it the option of continuing the franchise with possible sequels should the new film be successful and with the recent blu-ray release of the film, there seems to be continued talk of a possible sequel.
Rupert Wyatt whom directed the recent film is reportedly set to direct the sequel which will also include the return of Andy Serkis to the franchise. Serkis filled a similar role in ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ as he did to the Lord of the Rings franchise by taking on the role of a creature, this time being the ape Caesar and giving him character, depth and definition in his performance.
‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ ended perfectly placed for a new film to pick up the story with the apes ascending to power displacing humans as rulers of the planet. No doubt any sequel will continue along this path, however what other aspects might be explored or included in a new film remains to be seen.
