A Thrill Ride Into The Cinema

A Thrill Ride Into The Cinema

Maybe it’s because I’m from Western Australia and we don’t really have theme park rides here but I’m a little behind on this ‘basing an entire movie premise around a theme park ride’ thing. Surely the producers could simply say that they came up with the idea independently and save the film some dignity, however the movie goers don’t seem to care when the films are actually quite good (Pirates of the Caribbean) and the producers don’t care period because there is a hell of a lot of profit involved.

Apparently Buena Vista are in negotiations to adapt Disneyworld’s popular Matterhorn ride into a blockbuster film. Basically, there are snow covered mountains with crazy and massive yeti’s living there. The ride has been entertaining people since 1959, and sounds exciting enough to inspire an at least adventurous film. According to Jason Dean Hall (who will be penning the script) “The idea is to do a thrilling, fast-paced movie centering on five young adventure seekers who, for mysterious reasons, are called to the top of the mountain and encounter Yetis on the journey down“. Sounds enthralling. None the less I am certain they will seek an amazing actor, some amazing set designers and cinematographers and make it worth our 15 bucks.

I understand that having two separate entities, promoting each other simultaneously is ingenious, just don’t expect me to like it. There will also be some “supernatural” elements thrown in (apart, of course, for the fact that Yeti’s are, arguably, also supernatural). The film will be titled “The Hill” and I am, sadly, very curious and disturbed by my anticipation for it.
