‘Odd’ Thomas is a part time short order cook working in the Pico Mundo Grill in the town of Pico Mundo, California. He is dating the prettiest girl in town, Stormy LLewellyn and his best friend is Elvis Presley. Elvis doesn’t talk much because, well, the dead can’t talk for some reason. Odd doesn’t know whether or not his gift is a blessing or a curse, and when a mysterious stranger comes to town, bags packed with information on the most infamous serial killers in history, Odd Thomas must use his gift to help prevent a tragedy from happening in his sleepy little town.
For anyone who has read the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz, the series is one of the best new supernatural horror tales in recent history. Mixing humour and thrills, Odd Thomas is a fantastic novel and as Dean Koontz has recently released motion comics and web series on the character, a movie was enevitable.
Personally, I think it would have made a great cable tv show, as would Preacher, the comic series long languishing in development hell.
The news of Stephen Sommers directing and writing the film comes as a bit of a surprise as this material would be more akin to someone with a lighter touch and more reserved pace of filmmaking.
Having said that, he might knock it out of the ballpark and make Odd Thomas the event movie that it should be.
The trailer for the latest book in the series ‘Odd Hours’ is below.
ODD THOMAS is scheduled for release sometime in 2012
