Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert Heads to Perth in 2027

Thirty years after Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes brought Shakespeare to the MTV generation, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet is returning to the big screen — this time with its iconic soundtrack performed live.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert will tour Australia in May 2027 as part of a new global tour celebrating the film’s 30th anniversary.

For Perth audiences, the production will take over Riverside Theatre on Tuesday, 25 May 2027, before travelling to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Romeo + Juliet Returns 30 Years Later

Originally released in 1996, Luhrmann’s wildly stylised adaptation starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet.

The film took Shakespeare’s tragedy and dropped it into the colourful, chaotic world of Verona Beach. Guns replaced swords, Hawaiian shirts met religious imagery and one of the decade’s most memorable soundtracks helped turn the film into a genuine ’90s cultural landmark.

Three decades later, the film remains closely tied to its music, fashion and unmistakable visual style.

The new concert production will screen the complete film with its original dialogue and action intact. At the same time, a live ensemble will perform the score and soundtrack in sync with the movie.

Rather than relying on a traditional orchestra alone, the show mixes rock and orchestral musicians, live vocals, electronics and a DJ — fittingly reflecting Luhrmann’s genre-bending approach to the film.

“This concert celebrates both, while inviting audiences around the world to experience the film’s emotion, music, and theatricality in a completely new way.”

— Baz Luhrmann

A Soundtrack That Defined A Generation

Music was central to what made Romeo + Juliet stand apart from almost every Shakespeare adaptation that came before it.

Its soundtrack mixed alternative rock, pop, dance music and sweeping romantic ballads, with songs becoming almost as closely associated with the film as DiCaprio and Danes themselves.

Tracks featured in the film include:

  • “Kissing You” — Des’ree
  • “Lovefool” — The Cardigans
  • “Talk Show Host” — Radiohead
  • “#1 Crush” — Garbage
  • “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)” — Quindon Tarver
  • “Young Hearts Run Free” — Kym Mazelle
  • “You and Me Song” — The Wannadies

The live concert format will bring that music back to the forefront, with the musicians performing alongside the full film on the big screen.

From Sydney Opera House To A Global Tour

The new production will make its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House on 29 September 2026, with the event already sold out.

From there, Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert will head out on a global tour spanning three continents before returning to Australia for its national run in May 2027.

Producer and GEA Live Managing Director Floris Douwes said the aim was to honour the film’s legacy while offering audiences a new way to experience it.

“Our goal was to create a live experience that honors that legacy while giving audiences a fresh reason to fall in love with the film all over again.”
