Shia LaBeouf returns as Sam Witwicky in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. When a mysterious event from Earth’s past erupts into the present day it threatens to bring a war to Earth so big that the Transformers alone will not be able to save us.
The Third Transformers film is pretty much about to hit screens worldwide within the next few hours and as I look back at the first two, I sort of realise that TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON is by far the best in the series. Now I’m not going to sit here and slam Michael Bay for the next couple of paragraphs I did enjoy the first film and when I think of it I enjoyed the second one as well, there were just a few reasons not to love it so expectations were a little bit low walking into the Third and wow was it impressive, there’s so many twists and turns you really have no idea exactly what is going to happen next. I really don’t think Michael Bay has ever heard of the whole ‘Less is More’ concept, but who care’s Transformers 3 is going to be extremely hard to beat in this American Summer Season.
To start off with the hasty exit of Megan Fox over some Hitler related comments, I was wondering how they were going to deal with that and I really wanted to see her die but sorry guys you don’t get to see that, I’m not going to get all spoilerish but its done in a ‘classy’ way. There are some sensational additions to the third film, John Malkovich as the a tad eccentric but indeed crazy Boss of Sam he was hilarious in pretty much all the screen time he had, Patrick Dempsey now I wasn’t quite sold on this but his character wasn’t even close to what I expected so kudos, Tony Award Winner Frances McDormand as Mearing, is fantastic in anything she does and she didn’t disappoint with this. Rosie Huntingon-Whiteley now she is insanely gorgeous and every time she was onscreen it did somewhat feel like a Victoria Secret commercial but for her first acting job I was quite impressed, I’m not going to go as far and say she was sensational, she does need a bit of work but she gets a solid B+ for her efforts. I think this time around Transformers has stepped up the humour with the edition of Ken Jeong (Hangover) and Jon Turturro back once again as Simmons some of the lines out of these two guys was fantastic.
Onto the Main cast Shia once again cranks out Sam as he does, but this time he really stepped it up… Sam is a bit more hardcore in the third, once you see it you will get what I mean he’s definitely ‘grown up’ somewhat. Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Julie White and Kevin Dunn also bring there presence known in the Third. Sam’s parents don’t feature heavily in this one but as always the family dynamic is quite funny at times. Peter Cullen as Optimus still brings chills every time he talks I don’t know whether it’s just the nostalgia of it or just seeing a 50 foot robot on the screen just does it for me but Leonard Nimoy as Sentinel Prime, like when he started to talk I was like is it?… yes it is, fantastic he definitely has the voice for an Autobot.
What I liked about the third was by far the story it is a hundred times better then the second film, the 3D is insanely impressive, I haven’t seen 3D like this since Avatar, its funny looking back when Michael Bay wouldn’t shut up about 3D dying and now he’s basically hand in hand with James Cameron talking it up, so I think he finally realised that it can bring depth and it can make you ‘feel’ something, everyone has there own views on what 3D does for them and I’m into the whole immerseful 3D like ‘Avatar’ and ‘Tron’ so I think the only way to see this Transformers is to see it in 3D, but I think most of all Michael Bay just pulled this one off, Battles are INSANE, I look at the second and even the first and this one just smashes them both combined and Steve Jablonsky with is impressive score he knows how to make music work for films. The only thing in the entire film that didn’t do it for me was that the middle dragged a bit and at a runtime of 154minutes I really noticed but Bay makes up for it with the last 45minutes by far the shots over Chicago are the best I have seen in years.
TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON exceeded my expectations and more, if you loved the first and hated the second you have to see the third.. I guarantee you will feel redeemed.
I give this film 4.5 out of 5. TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON is in cinemas tomorrow.
