2014 Box Office Champions – You May be Offended!

2014 Box Office Champions – You May be Offended!

The results are in! Minions have been frantically working the calculators to order the 2014 films that scored the most cha-ching! Believe me, you’ll be SHOCKED at some of the results…you may even lose your faith in humanity at the sight of a few of them!

The top flicks on the Worldwide Box Office Gross list for 2014 are…

#15 THE LEGO MOVIE – $461.1 million

An understandable addition to the list; both kid and adult friendly, clever and funny with a great message. Well received by critics.

#14 THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES –  $470.2 million

Yeah I had to look twice too! Not bad, making it so high on the list when it only had it’s first release three weeks ago, and only hit some worldwide theatres two days ago. And, based on it’s current performance, we’re likely to see Bilbo jump up a place or two by new years day…

#13 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES – $477.2 million

This is one of those moments I warned you about….I understand if your faith in the cinema-going community is a little shaken. Rated only 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s a rather disappointing addition to the list.

#12 RIO 2 – $498.8 million

Sure, it’s not exactly impressive filmmaking. But it’s cute fun for the family

#11 GODZILLA – $525 million

I’ll admit, I enjoyed this flick, but am surprised to see it so highly rated.

#10 HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 – $618.9 million

More proof that family movies are the way to a cashed up bank account.

#9 INTERSTELLAR – $639.4 million

While some audiences claimed it was “hard work” viewing this flick, the numbers speak for themselves!

#8 THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 – $650.7 million

Arguably the weakest flick in the series thus far, but still a money-spinner.

#7 DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES – $708.3 million

Fair dos.

#6 THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2 – $709 million

I’m not gonna lie…several of my friends walked out of this movie. Perhaps if cinemas were more flexible with refunds, the figures surrounding this flick would be vastly different!

#5 CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER – $714.1 million

Worth every penny!

#4 X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST – $746 million

Sci-Fi is ruling the day it seems!

#3 MALEFICENT – $757.8 million

Another flick that divided critics, receiving a lukewarm 49% on Rotten Tomatoes… but since when did viewers listen to critics anyway?! Hehe!

#2 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – $772.3 million

I know; you expected this to be number one right? Wait ‘til you see what trumped it!

And the top box office flick for 2014 is………………………

#1 TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION  – $1.1 billion(!)

Possibly the WORST film I have seen in a long time, my spirit died just a little when I saw it atop the 2014 list.  Ranked an embarrassing 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and a poor 5.9 on IMDb it’s a sorry champion at this year’s box office.

What are your thoughts? Any surprises?

Sian's love for movies spawned from having a tight mother whose generosity stretched only to hiring movies once a week for entertainment. As a pre-teen Sian spent more pocket money then she earned on cinema tickets and thus sought a job at the cinema. Over the next decade she rose to be one of the greats in her backwater, six-screen cinema complex, zooming through the ranks from candy bar wench with upselling superpowers, to pasty projectionist, to a manager rocking a pencil skirt. Sian went on to study Journalism at university though feels her popcorn shovelling days were far more educational
