Alien 5 to be Alien 3?

Earlier this week we mentioned that an Alien 5 film is on the way from District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, as it turns out it’s more like we’re getting Alien 3 again (no, it’s not a typo).

Echoing Bryan Singer’s move with Superman Returns, the new Alien film looks like its acknowledging the original two films in the series only, and forgetting about Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection!

Blomkamp is currently promoting his latest film Chappie, which stars Hugh Jackman and none other than Sigourney Weaver, it was during this promotional tour that Blomkamp was reported to say that his new Alien film plans to give Ellen Ripley a “proper finish”, clearly Blomkamp isn’t much of a fan of David Fincher, or Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s instalments to the franchise (and who can blame him).

In fact to be clear the directly has been quoted straight up as follows;

I want this film to feel like it’s literally the genetic sibling of Aliens

So it’s Alien, Aliens, and then this movie.

It’s a bit of a drag for fans of those films, Alien 3 in particular developed something of a following after it’s disappointing theatrical run, and Alien: Resurrection isn’t without its supporters. For now, no further details are known about the film, could we see Hicks back for this instalment? Or perhaps Nute? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
