The American Pie series is looking to make its first return to a theatrical release since ‘American Pie: The Wedding’ which was in theatres during 2003. Since the third instalment in the franchise the American Pie series opted to produce several direct to DVD films of which there have been four instalments to date beginning with ‘American Pie Presents: Band Camp’ in 2005 to the most recent ‘American Pie Presents: The Book of Love’ in 2009.
The fourth instalment in the theatrical release series if you will, ‘American Reunion’ is currently scheduled for a release during 2012. Casting news has previously included Jason Biggs, Sean William Scott, and Eugene Levy as all having signed on for the film with Tara Reid, Chris Klein, and Mena Suvari remaining unconfirmed so far.
It is now being reported the Alyson Hannigan will be returning in the next film, which is good news for those excited at the news of the new film given her character plays quite a central role due to her relationship with the character Jim.
Looking back over the box office performance of each film in the theatrical series it’s not difficult to wonder why the studio is keen to return to the series, each film managed to gross over $230 million worldwide with the second film achieving a gross return of approximately $287 million, all from very modest budgets.
