Over the last few months we saw reports that the next Avatar movies were about to kick off shooting, for those that don’t know James Cameron is looking at shooting Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5 back to back which is going to take about 8 years of his life to shoot.
These films have been in production for years and have constantly been pushed back originally we were going to see Avatar 2 in 2014 then its December 2018 and now who knows.
Here’s the comments straight from Cameron.
“Well, 2018 is not happening. We haven’t announced a firm release date. What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. (Laughs) So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life. It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four. We’re full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we’ll be 24-7. We’re pretty well designed on all our creatures and sets. It’s pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we’re going to draw that curtain when the time is right.”
Funnily enough a few years ago we interviewed Sam Worthington for DRIFT (Click here to have a look) and asked him when hes going to shoot Avatar 2, he said it was close and hes waiting for the phone call. Don’t get me wrong its a massive undertaking these films but I kind of feel sorry for the talent including Sam, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver who is coming back for the film but in a different kind of role as these movies will take up a massive chunk of their lives aswell so I have a feeling the scheduling on these films is insane.
I’m still totally intrigued to see how the world of Pandora fairs after the events of the first film. We definitely see the sequels because fox has invested heavily in them but who knows when?
