Errr… The Original Karate Kid is Getting a Sequel

I have found this to be the most bizarre news of the year.. BUT it looks like we will be seeing a sequel to the original Karate Kid film via YouTube Red next year. The 10 episode 30 minute series was shopped around to numerous outlets including Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and AMC and word on the street everyone was fighting big time for it with YouTube Red winning out in the end.

The series will be called “Cobra Kai” and it would bring the original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back together 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Johnny is seeking redemption by re-opening the Cobra Kai Karate dojo which obviously reignites his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso who is strugging to maintain balance in his life without his mentor Mr Miyagi.

Don’t get me wrong it seems like an interesting concept but this show could go either way, it could be down right hilarious or an absolute abomination. The global head of original content at YouTube Susanne Daniels has said “The minute I heard about this project, I knew we had to have it. ‘The Karate Kid’ became an instant classic in the 1980s, and still resonates with audiences around the world and on YouTube today,” she continued with “We’re thrilled to partner with Sony TV, Overbrook and the talented writing team led by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg to add a fresh, new comedic twist on one of Hollywood’s most storied rivalries.”

The series itself is written and produced by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (who we interviewed for the film American Reunion they wrote/directed it) with Josh Heald.. who wrote “Hot Tub Time Machine”.

Soo what do you think? Do we really need this series, no word on if it will air commercially here in Australia but you can always buy a YouTube Red account when it hits.
