Gerard Butler Stars in Flannan Isle Mystery Retelling, ‘The Vanishing’

A trailer for the upcoming drama thriller The Vanishing has been released, starring Gerard Butler (Hunter Killer), Peter Mullan (Ozark), and Connor Swindells (VS.). The Vanishing, written by Joe Bone and Celyn Jones and directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, was originally titled Keepers, and is unrelated to the 1988 or 1993 films also titled The Vanishing.

After three lighthouse keepers arrive for work on a remote Scottish isle, they make a fateful discovery: a wrecked rowboat — with a chest full of gold. As a mysterious boat heads toward the island, the three men make a choice that will change their lives forever, ensnaring them in a web of greed, paranoia, and murder.

The film is based on true events surrounding the Flanna Isle Mystery. In December 1900, the crew of the Hesperus arrive at Eilean Mor in the Flannan Isles off the northwest coast of Scotland to discover the three attendant lighthouse keepers – Thomas Marshall, James Ducat, and Donald McArthur – missing. Upon investigation of the lighthouse, the crew of the Hesperus found the kitchen table laid with food, the clock stopped, an overturned chair, and two of the three oilskin coats belonging to the three keepers were gone. The circumstances caused wild speculation of supernatural interference, and the upcoming film is just one thrilling interpretation of the mysterious events.

There is currently no set Australian release date.
