Goonies never say die!

Goonies never say die!

In 1985 Richard Donner alongside writers Steven Speilberg and Chris Columbus came together and made one of the most memorable 1980’s wonder films with a great young cast that included names such as Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Corey Feldman.

Of course this film is the Goonies, and was destined to become a classic. At this stage Donner had moved on from Superman but hadn’t reached the point where he launched the hugely popular buddy cop series Lethal Weapon, leaving the Goonies to fill a nice niche in his career.

The idea of a sequel to the Goonies is one of those concepts that leaves fans somewhat divided, there are those who love the original and just want to leave that experience alone and untouched, while others are willing to risk going back to the well in the hopes that a sequel might prove just as entertaining.

Despite rumours nothing concrete has ever eventuated as far as a Goonies sequel goes, however the man himself Richard Donner made mention of such a film in the last few days. It’s been reported that he made the following comment;

We’re doing a sequel

Seems pretty certain from his perspecive though we’ve seen nothing official from the studios side of things. Further to that though in regards to which cast members might be returning he had the following to say;

Hopefully all of ‘em

So, putting aside how likely this actually is, almost three decades later where do you sit on the idea of a sequel to the Goonies?

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
