GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has cleared the $600 million mark at the worldwide box office this weekend, eclipsing fellow Marvel titles IRON MAN, THOR, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.
The film has dragged U.S box office sales into a welcome recovery after a relatively slow year, scoring $300 million in North American takings. It is the first film of the year to achieve this milestone.
Internationally, Guardians cleared the $300 million mark on Saturday, pushing its total past $600 million.
Despite this impressive haul, it will struggle to pass the year’s current leader, Michael Bay’s AGE OF EXTINCTION, which raked in a global gross of $1.077 billion. Guardians sits in eighth place, but is poised to overtake HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 ($605.6 million)
