Guillermo Del Toro hopes for a Pacific Rim trilogy

Pacific Rim 2 is only in pre-production with Guillermo Del Toro still working through early stages, however the director says he’s constructing story ideas that naturally flow into a third film. Promoting the film “The Book of Life” for which Del Toro has been a producer, he spoke to press advising that the Pacific Rim 2 first draft is complete, and that he expects full pre-production to be underway by late next year.

In terms of what direction the sequel will take, Del Toro has commented that while some existing characters will definitely be returning, others won’t be as they’ll become more pivotal in the third instalment. More specifically he was reported making the following comments;

Let’s hope we have three movies, so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.

Pacific Rim made a splash on worldwide screens in mid-2013 of course, the sequel is currently scheduled for a 2017 release.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
