Independence Day sequel casting news

Independence Day sequel casting news

After the announcement that there will be a sequel to the 1996 hit, it was believed that all original cast will return.

Disappointingly, Will Smith has informed 20th Century that he will not be reprising his role of Captain Steven Hiller, in director Roland Emmerich’s upcoming movie.

So the question is, what will happen to the story without the main star?  Emmerich and co-writer/producer Dean Devil, are planning to take on the aliens without Smith.   Emmerich has stated that there are two versions of the script.  James Vanderbilt has been busy writing the stories, one which includes Smith, and another that introduces a new character.

The director has confirmed that a number of the original film’s characters appear in both scripts.  The 1996 original also starred Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Randy Quaid, Mary McDonnell, James Duval and Vivica A. Fox.

The sequel is set for a July 2016 release. That date marks the 20th anniversary of the 1996 box office hit.

Stay tuned for further news.
