Is Abrams returning for Star Wars: Episode IX?

The release date for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is rapidly approaching, and while we are eagerly anticipating a new trailer for the film (is it going to be attached to Avengers 2?), rumours have arisen indicating that JJ might be back for another film after all.

It was previously understood that JJ will be stepping down after Episode VII, with Looper writer/director Rian Johnson taking over the reins for Episode VIII, and quite likely Episode IX as well.

However while Johnson is still attached to Episode VIII, it’s now being reported that the execs at Disney are so in love with the Episode VII footage so far, that they want to pull JJ back in for Episode IX to round out the new trilogy.

Abrams has previously indicated he was on-board for just the one instalment, and no doubt should Star Wars go well (or even if it doesn’t), odds are he’s going to be in demand after his Episode VII work wraps up, and will be able to pick any project he likes.

Ultimately we’ll have to wait and see, Episode IX is scheduled for a 2019 release, and we’ll be seeing three Star Wars films including Star Wars: Rogue One between now and then so anything could happen.

Given the choice though, who’s your pick for Episode IX, Abrams or Johnson?

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
