Jack Ryan close to filming

Ten years has passed since we last saw Jack Ryan appear on the big screen in ‘The Sum of All Fears’ when Ben Affleck was cast in the role. Affleck was the third actor to portray the character on screen following Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford.

Progress on a new Jack Ryan film has been slow but on the cards for a long time now and we’ve previously learned that Star Trek star Chris Pine has been cast in the role. Pine’s role in the Star Trek franchise has reportedly caused some scheduling issues but now it seems all is moving ahead with principal photography set to begin soon.

Unsurprisingly it seems that Paramount has nothing less than a trilogy in mind for the new series of films, with the first instalment scheduled for a late 2013 release. Previously the Jack Ryan films worked quite well as standalone films, and while part of the same franchise, weren’t interrelated to any great extent.

It seems that the new franchise will be somewhat closer related, at least in a continuity sense with multiple films being planned. Not to limit things to one new franchise, however Kevin Costner who is involved with the new film may be involved in a spin-off series called ‘Without Remorse’. Launching from an existing Tom Clancy novel, the spin-off film would be designed to exist well within the Ryan universe.

Kenneth Branagh is currently attached to direct and star in the new film.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
