Jamie Dornan is preparing to step into one of the most iconic roles in fantasy cinema, and the actor has acknowledged the enormous responsibility of following Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Mortensen’s portrayal of Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s original The Lord of the Rings trilogy remains one of the franchise’s most beloved performances. Now, with Middle-earth returning to cinemas under the direction of Andy Serkis, Dornan has the unenviable task of bringing a different chapter of the legendary character’s life to the big screen.
Speaking to L’Officiel, in comments subsequently reported by Variety, Dornan acknowledged the expectations surrounding his casting, making it clear that he has no intention of competing with Mortensen’s performance.
“There’s no part of me that’s trying to outdo him.”
Dornan also praised Mortensen’s interpretation of Aragorn, describing it as one of his favourite performances and expressing his admiration for what the actor brought to the character.
It’s a thoughtful approach to a role that carries considerable weight with fans. Rather than attempting to recreate the Aragorn audiences already know, Dornan has an opportunity to explore a different stage in the character’s journey.
A Different Aragorn for a Different Story
In The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Dornan will portray Aragorn during his years as Strider, the mysterious Ranger who would eventually become King of Gondor.
Set before the central events of The Fellowship of the Ring, the film explores the search for Gollum, whose knowledge of the One Ring could have devastating consequences for Middle-earth.
With Gandalf recognising the danger posed by Gollum’s connection to the Ring, Aragorn becomes involved in the hunt for the elusive creature. The story offers an opportunity to revisit familiar characters while exploring events that Peter Jackson’s original trilogy largely left off-screen.
For Dornan, the role represents a significant addition to a career that includes Belfast, The Fall and the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. But taking on Aragorn comes with a particularly passionate audience and inevitable comparisons to Mortensen’s portrayal.
Andy Serkis Returns to Middle-earth
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be directed by Andy Serkis, who also reprises his iconic performance as Gollum.
Serkis became an integral part of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films through his groundbreaking motion-capture portrayal of Gollum, and his return brings an important connection to the original trilogy.
The film will also welcome back several familiar faces, including Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins and Lee Pace as Thranduil.
Joining the franchise are Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall and Anya Taylor-Joy, alongside Dornan.
The production brings together returning talent and new cast members, with the story taking audiences into a previously unexplored chapter of the cinematic Middle-earth saga.
Can Jamie Dornan Make Aragorn His Own?
Recasting a character as beloved as Aragorn was always going to generate discussion, particularly when Viggo Mortensen’s performance remains so closely associated with Peter Jackson’s films.
However, The Hunt for Gollum isn’t simply revisiting the same story. By focusing on Strider’s earlier adventures and the pursuit of Gollum, the film offers Dornan an opportunity to establish his own interpretation without directly recreating the events of the original trilogy.
Whether audiences embrace that interpretation remains to be seen, but Dornan’s comments suggest he understands just how much the character means to fans.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release in cinemas on 17 December 2027.
