That was quick! Just over a week ago, AccessReel reported how Amazon Studios, The Tolkien Estate and Warner Bros. were in talks over a LORD OF THE RINGS television series….well, it’s a goer!
The project is officially confirmed as “going head”. Not only that, it’s also revealed the show is getting a multi-season commitment. Middle Earth fans can expect another epic adaptation, with the rights reported to be bought for around $200million (USD). If Amazon studios are willing to spend that kind of cash just to obtain permission to use Tolkien’s source material, it’s fair to assume the overall series budget is considerable.
This exciting news did come laced with some potential “bummers” for Peter Jackson’s brand of LOTR fans: The series will be set before the events depicted in his acclaimed movie adaptations. The press release states:
“Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series.”
So now we know we [sadly] won’t be following Frodo and his fellowship’s quest for the ring, what can we expect? Well details are yet to be released, however there is one thing for sure: There’s no shortage of material with Tolkien’s Silmarilliion.
