New York Broadway came to the the Luna Cinemas on Thursday night for BIRDMAN and so did the crowds. Luna Cinemas in Leederville was the highest grossing cinema site in Australia on the opening day of the movie, narrowly leading the way over arthouse cinema locations in Melbourne (Nova Carlton at number two) and Sydney (Dendy Newtown at number three). Bigger crowds are expected for the weekend with BIRDMAN receiving nine Oscar nominations this week including Best Picture.
A live drummer on the corner of Oxford & Vincent street thumping out the films moody score, red carpet and theatre lights, a NY street hotdog vendor and searchlights beaming into the sky helped recreate a bustling broadway feel in the heart of Leederville.
The cinema will again transform for sessions at 6.45pm, 8.15pm (outdoor) and 9.15pm on Saturday night, with FREE hotdogs (to the first 500 cinema patrons each night with a Birdman cinema ticket). Patrons can also score themselves free Birdman merchandise (badges/shirts, while stocks last). Online sales here.
