Documentary filmmaker Mark Lewis has returned to the subject of the cane toad. Twenty three years ago he made the award-winning CANE TOADS: AN UNNATURAL HISTORY (1988). Currently screening across the country is his new documentary feature CANE TOADS: THE CONQUEST (see review) As the title suggests, in the time since the last film, the cane toad has conquered the top end of Australia. Lewis has created a film of scientific facts and social anecdotes that will entertain and amuse.
Mark Lewis spoke to AccessReel via telephone from his home in Mullimbimby, New South Wales. He discusses how he gets his footage, shooting in 3D and learning some compassion for an animal that we have learned to consider nothing more than a pest.
