More Star Wars Rumours

It’s always a good time to talk Star Wars and with a few rumours coming out lately it seemed like a good time for a quick update on what’s happening, or rumoured to be happening on the Star Wars front.

So first up, spinoffs! As you likely already know we’re looking at an entire new trilogy of films labelled Episodes VII, VIII, and IX but we’re also looking at standalone releases probably between each numbered sequel, the first of which is targeting a 2016 release.

Recently at a conference, the Disney CFO has been quoted to say these non-numbered films shouldn’t be considered “spinoffs” or “standalones”, but are “origin” films.

The comment indicates we could be literally looking at a number of origin tales for existing characters we’ve already met, though what this means for expanded universe tales that have explored similar territory we’ll have to wait and see (though be prepared for the EU to be over written.)

With an origin already covered in the prequels this latest comment might leave Boba Fett on the side lines for a while, and we could see other characters such as Mace Windu, Han Solo, Darth Maul, Dengar, or even Zam Wesell getting the solo big screen treatment.

Next up is the Millennium Falcon, not only will she make point five past light speed but she’s possibly returning to screens in the new films. Reports have surfaced indicating that interior sets of the infamous YT-1300 freighter are being constructed in London where the bulk of filming on Episode VII is intended to take place.

So still not a lot to go, we’ll continue to wait for formal Star Wars announcements hopefully in the not too distant future.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
