New Director for Spiderman?

The Marc Webb directed Spiderman reboot has performed very well currently estimated to have generated approximately $531 million in worldwide box office revenues within less than a month of release.

The film has clearly been designed with sequels in mind as with any potential franchise in the current era of cinema, no doubt given the financial performance plans are already going ahead for the development of a sequel to the new film. But will those plans involve Marc Webb as director?

Webb comes from a background of directing music videos for bands including No Doubt and Green Day, however he made a large splash in the film industry with the popular ‘500 Days of Summer’ starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. It appears that part of his deal with Fox studios includes another film following ‘500 Days of Summer’ and this is where things get complicated with Spiderman.

Webb is reported to have an obligation to Fox Studios for another film however Sony are no doubt enthusiastic about moving on the Spiderman franchise in the short term future. Whether there is anyway for Webb to re-negotiate his obligations to Fox, or of Sony would wait for him to wrap up another film before returning to Spiderman we’ll just have to wait and see but for the time being his involvement in any sequel is far from assured.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
