Early reports this week indicated that a Matrix reboot is in the works.
The backlash from fans of the franchise was immediate – many claiming it was too early for a reboot. Rumors of Warner Bros Pictures wanting Michael B. Jordan for the main role further annoyed fans and left everyone questioning why Keanu Reeves had been replaced in a reboot no one wants.
Today, screenwriter Zak Penn, has put fans’ fears to rest by confirming that the upcoming Matrix film will be a new story set within the universe. No one will be stepping in to take on the role of Neo.
Penn further explained that those who are familiar with the Animatrix will understand the possibilities of the Matrix universe.
“Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the Matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with X-men universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me,” said Penn.
A concept that is said to be favoured by the studio is a young Morpheus movie, which might be used to kick off a new Matrix franchise.
Recently, both Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne showed interest in returning to their iconic roles. The Wachowskis are not set to direct the new film.
