No rush to recast Indy

Is Indy being recast or will Harrison continue?

Earlier in the year there was much speculation about recasting the Indiana Jones character for either a reboot of the franchise or a new sequel to slot in somewhere between Last Crusade and Crystal Skull. Chris Pratt was one of the more popular casting rumours however according to Frank Marshall there’s been no discussion of recasting Harrison Ford.

Marshall has been either a producer or executive producer on all of the Indy films, and it’s being reported that on the topic of casting the role he made the following comments;

There are a lot of rumours…we haven’t even sat down to talk about Indy yet… at some point we’ll sit down. But there’s a bunch of people who could probably take the baton.

they’re “not doing the Bond thing where we’re going to call somebody else Indiana Jones… we have to figure this out.

Pretty vague comments to be honest, and it sounds like there’s no firm plan in place for the future of the franchise, other than it’s something they’ll deal with in due course.

It does however seem at this stage there’s more interest in continuing the franchise with a new central character taking over, rather than recasting/rebooting.

The approach for Crystal Skull fuelled belief that passing the baton would be the pathway for the franchise given the inclusion of Speilberg favourite Shia LaBeouf as Indy’s son, however despite it’s financial success that film didn’t fare so well critically…..and with LaBouf’s erratic behaviour that occurred following the film, any continued involvement of his character Mutt Williams seems unlikely.

We’ll have to stay tuned for more news about the future of Indy, but it feels like it’s going to take a long while before a new film is underway.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
