Point Break to Return?

Point Break to Return?

Some of us might recall the 1991 film ‘Point Break’ starring pre-Speed and pre-Matrix Keanu Reeves, along side a post-Dirty Dancing and post-Ghost Patrick Swayze, and directed by The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow.

‘Point Break’ is a rollercoaster ride filled with cheesy quotable dialogue, well shot action sequences, and performances which somehow just work to make for a fun film. Rumours have sprung up occasionally over the years about a possible sequel to the film, however recently talk has turned more to the idea of a reboot.

It seems that Alcon Entertainment, is considering a reboot idea presumably with a longer term view of establishing a series of films should the first instalment be successful. Alcon currently holds the rights to the film including any sequels/reboots/remakes and is considering a Kurt Wimmer screenplay for the project.

Kurt Wimmer has a number of screenplays to his name, including the currently filming ‘Total Recall’ project, as well as previous films ‘Street Kings’, ‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Equilibrium’, and ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’.

The new version of ‘Point Break’ is intended to take place within the world of international extreme sports, and will involve an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal organisation connected to the sporting scene.

Looking at the previous screenplays that Wimmer has worked on it doesn’t instil a lot of confidence, there are some reasonable movies in the mix but a few misses as well. The idea leaves me feeling a little mixed, wondering if we really need a reboot to a 20 year old stand alone film.

We’ll let you know more if it progresses.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
