Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct the fourth film of the The Matrix universe. And yes, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are returning in the roles of Neo and Trinity.
Warner Bros. has been working to re-enter The Matrix for several years. The process was stalled due to producing rights. Recently, the studio decided to push harder as a result of Reeves’ excellent box office business in the lead role of JOHN WICK 3 and the success of Wachowski’s TOY STORY 4 script.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute the film internationally. Warner Bros.’ Toby Emmerich: “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”
The script was written by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski is producing with Grant Hill. The three previous Matrix films collectively earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office. All were written and directed by Lana and her sister, Lilly. “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Wachowski said.
Details of the new story have not been made public. The MATRIX 4 will begin production early in 2020.
