Shazam! finds its lead actor!

One of the upcoming DC Comic film adaptations has found its leading actor!

It’s been announced that fan favourite Zachary Levi, who you might have seen in the popular TV series Chuck, or more recently in the Thor sequels as Fandral, will take on the lead role in a Shazam! film, which will continue to expand the DC Cinematic Universe.

Levi also appeared in the Heroes Reborn series, and voiced the character Flynn in the Disney film Tangled. He’s now moving from the Marvel to DC cinematic universe where he’ll play Shazam.

Formerly called Captain Marvel, the Shazam! story centres on the boy Billy Batson, who upon speaking the word Shazam, is transformed into an adult with super human abilities.

Having made no appearances in the DC films as yet, Shazam! will broaden the cinematic setting as it widens up the number of characters in the DC film toy box, and will no doubt introduce new villains to occupy the setting.

Filming is reportedly commencing in early 2018, with a release date of 2019, the same year as the Wonder Woman sequel. 2018 is shaping up to be a quiet year for DC however, with only Aquaman on the release schedule.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
