Back in 1999 M. Night Shyamalan made a big impact on the film industry when The Sixth Sense was released, collaborating with Bruce Willis the film went on to great success. Following that up in 2000 was Unbreakable, once again teaming up with Willis, Shyamalan’s superhero origin film didn’t quite leave the same impact as The Sixth Sense, however it was still generally well received.
Since then Shyamalan’s films haven’t been able to recapture that early success, however he is reportedly in talks for a new project that has a few interesting points of note. Labor of Love is the title of this new project and Shyamalan is in talks with Bruce Willis to star. If it happens it will be the first time in over a decade the pair team up for a film. Secondly, this project is older than both of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, in the early 1990’s Shyamalan sold the screenplay for Labor of Love to Fox studios. The project didn’t go ahead at the time and Shyamalan went on to different things.
Could returning to a script from earlier in his life and re-teaming with Willis pave the way for a Shyamalan return to form? We’ll just have to wait and see, but as a director he’s proven resilient if nothing else.
