Sofia Coppola has finally written and directed a new film. It’s SOMEWHERE – the tale of a bad-boy actor Johnny Marco, played by Stephen Dorff, suddenly finding himself having to take care of his 11 year old daughter Cleo, played by Elle Fanning.
The feature is Coppola’s first since the critically panned MARIE ANTOINETTE in 2006. Coppola also wrote directed the Oscar-winning LOST IN TRANSLATION( 2003). SOMEWHERE has already garnered the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Many critics have assumed that Coppola based the relationship between Johnny and Cleo with her own relationship with Francis Ford Coppola. However, Sofia Coppola in the video featurette below suggests the story has a slightly different evolution.
On the evidence of the trailer and this short it seems SOMEWHERE is a ground breaking role for Dakota Fanning’s younger suster Elle and the best part Stephen Dorff has had for many years. Michelle Monaghan also has a small role.
SOMEWHERE is released in Australia on Boxing Day, 2010.
