Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered a massive $30.4 million opening weekend at the Australian box office, giving Sony Pictures its biggest local debut ever.
Tom Holland’s latest outing as the Marvel web-slinger grossed $30.4 million across its four-day Thursday-to-Sunday opening weekend, according to figures released by Sony Pictures Releasing Australia.
The result makes Spider-Man: Brand New Day the biggest Australian opening of 2026 and the second-biggest four-day opening weekend ever recorded in the country.
The film finished behind only Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $34.1 million in 2019, while surpassing the $27.3 million opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.
The release also delivered the biggest Australian opening weekend ever for a Spider-Man film and the largest opening in the history of Sony Pictures Releasing Australia.
Among the records announced by Sony Pictures were the biggest Saturday ever recorded at the Australian box office, with $9.3 million, and the biggest Sunday, with $8.18 million.
The film is currently screening at more than 315 locations across Australia.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day has not only created brand new box office records but underscores the fact that going to see movies at the cinema is well and truly back,” Sony Pictures Releasing Australia Managing Director Stephen Basil-Jones said.
“It delivered the biggest Saturday ever at the cinemas, the biggest Sunday ever at the cinemas and the biggest opening in Sony Pictures’ long, illustrious 100-year history.
“This is a win for everyone. Fans and audiences of Spider-Man are just loving the film, the cinemas that are playing it and the industry at large, which is making a big, bold announcement that cinema is back, stronger than ever.”
A Massive Worldwide Opening
The film also launched strongly internationally, with Sony Pictures reporting a worldwide opening of US$927 million.
That figure includes a US$355 million domestic opening in the United States, making it the second-biggest US opening of all time behind Avengers: Endgame.
The film has also received a strong response from audiences, with Sony reporting a 90 per cent critics score and a 98 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes following its opening weekend.
What Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day About?
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter Parker is fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him.
As Peter watches his former friends move on with their lives, the pressure of protecting New York alone begins to trigger a dangerous transformation he may be unable to control.
That transformation could also become the only thing standing between the city and a powerful new villain no one can see.
The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.
