Star Trek’s Kelvin timeline confirmed to continue…

Star Trek’s Kelvin timeline confirmed to continue…

The quasi rebooted/new timeline of Star Trek films have reached their trilogy mark with Star Trek Beyond. While the most recent film was received reasonably well, the overall renewed franchise hasn’t been the runaway success that was likely sought back in 2009 when the first Chris Pine/Zack Quinto film was released.

With a production budget of almost $200 million, Beyond raked in around $336 million at the world wide box office, which is by no means a huge success. While Into Darkness did moderately better around the world, it’s not the trend you want to see with each subsequent film being released.

That said, Star Trek 4 was formally announced last year, though there’s been little news on the project since then, other than various plot rumours around time travel (sound familiar for a fourth star trek instalment).

Paramount Pictures however and their parent Viacom have recently been reported as stating the current film incarnation of Star Trek is set to continue at this point, with no plans for scrapping or re imagining the film series. So it looks like a sure thing that we’ll be seeing Chris Pine acting across from Chris Hemsworth, in a Star Trek adventure on the big screen. Two other franchises mentioned in the same context included predictably Transformers, as well as Mission Impossible which are both set to continue for the foreseeable future.

So with Star Trek Discovery well on the way, the cinematic releases will continue to document the adventures of Kirk, Spock and company for the time being. Excited, or hoping for another alteration to the timeline? Let us know in the comments!

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
