Star Wars Explosion!

Star Wars Explosion!

Disney and Lucasfilm continue to forge ahead with multiple Star Wars projects in the works, there have been a few announcements in recent weeks giving an idea of how they are planning to ramp up the Star Wars content over the next few years.

Obviously the Han Solo film is just around the corner, and following that we have Episode IX to look forward to, with JJ Abrams back at the helm for the closing chapter of the current trilogy. We’d previously heard that Rian Johnson is leading the way with a new trilogy of films, he’ll be writing that trilogy and directing at least the first instalment if not all three films, so what comes after that?

It has been announced that Game of Thrones TV show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be making the move to the Star Wars franchise, once their involvement with Game of Thrones wraps up with the final season.

Benioff and Weiss are attached to a series of new Star Wars films, with reports indicating that their films will be entirely separate from both the Skywalker saga, as well as Johnson’s new trilogy in the works. It also remains unclear if their films will slot into the stand alone anthology stories, or be a new ongoing saga.

If that wasn’t enough, with Star Wars Rebels on its final season is there any chance Disney would let Star Wars fade away from TV land? Not at all.

It appears there are a number of potential Star Wars TV projects in the works, at least one of which is planned to dovetail into Disney’s own entertainment streaming service announced late last year, an exclusive Star Wars show will no doubt draw many viewers across to the new service when it comes time to launch in late 2019.

So that’s multiple films, and TV projects in the works, not to mention the ongoing expansion of the novels, comics, etc. If only all those kids in the 80’s making the most of 3 movies knew what was coming…

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
