The World of Star Wars is Expanding!

Just announced this morning Rian Johnson will be helming a brand new trilogy of films with his producing partner Ram Bergman. Here’s the official Lucasfilm release.

Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.

As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.

No release dates have been set for the new films, and no porgs were available for comment.

What I find interesting about this is that they said “brand-new Star Wars trilogy” so sadly it looks like the last we will see of the legacy characters will be Episode 9.

In other news.. Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger also announced a Star Wars live action series which will be premiering on Disney’s brand new streaming service (similar to netflix) in 2019. It also looks like all our favorite Netflix Marvel shows will also be moving to Disney’s platform aswell, but for those fans of other Disney titles you will also see TV adaptations of Pixar’s 2001 film Monsters Inc., the Disney Channel series High School Musical, and an original series from Marvel. Nothing else is know just yet but its getting very interesting, considering Disney recently put in a pitch to purchase 20th Century Fox which was obviously an attempt to get their X-Men characters back and the full rights to the original Star Wars film thankfully that deal fell over and fingers crossed it doesn’t get back up.. I think Disney owns the world enough and taking over an iconic studio like Fox will just make them even more powerful.

So in short… a brand new Star Wars trilogy from Rian Johnson, a Star Wars live action series on Disney’s new VOD platform and a whole bunch of Disney shows coming in 2019!
