Recent rumors suggest Quentin Tarantino is looking at making a Star Trek film for Paramount. Who would have predicted that?
Reports are suggesting that Tarantino has met with JJ Abrams to discuss the idea for a new Trek film, and that a plans are underway to put Tarantino together with some writers to start developing a script for the project.
Plans for a fourth film in the semi-rebooted Trek film franchise have seemed rocky since Beyond’s underwhelming box office response, however one early idea commented on by Abrams was to bring Chris Hemsworth back as George Kirk in what was presumably going to be a time travel adventure. Since then, there’s been little news about where the film franchise is heading.
Tarantino traditionally makes his own original films of course (The Hateful Eight being the most recently released), without having been involved in a franchise such as Trek for his film career, this would be an unexpected step for him.
Adding further confusion is the fact that Tarantino’s has also been recently making comments that he’s looking at retirement from film making after the next project or two, and it would seem strange that he’d exit the industry with a franchise film. Maybe the retirement comments aren’t accurate, maybe he’s changed his mind, or maybe Star Trek will actually be his film-making swansong.
We’ll have to wait and see whether this develops into anything more tangible, but the idea of a Tarantino Star Trek film is intriguing to say the least!
