The Buffy Reboot

The Buffy Reboot

People have been whispering about a possible reboot of the Buffy franchise, tip toeing around what they think would be the best way to go about it, but now Warner Brothers have shouted from their mountain top that it’s happening people so get ready!

Warner Brothers have confirmed Atlas’ Steve Alexander and Charles Roven along with Roy Lee and Doug Davidson from Vertigo Entertainment will produce the movie with the script written by Whit/ Anderson. They all seem pretty excited about it all, Charles Roven had this to say “Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy,” said Roven. “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.” So there you have it, no mention of Joss Whedon or Sarah Michelle Gellar and they basically said that the new Buffy will have nothing to do with the older and more beloved television show but the fans of the character will still love it.

Seems kind of contradictory to me.

As I stated previously Joss Whedon will have nothing to do with the new Buffy movie Warner Brothers are planning. Apparently Joss was approached with the project but turned it down sighting his disapproval of the direction they were taking the character in. Lets not forget however that Joss Whedon wrote the 1992 movie ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and then reinvented the story for television in 1997 and made it into a worldwide phenomenon. Naturally he would be the first person you would go to for advice on re-imagining the franchise, Joss had this to say to E news “This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there are no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you Leave me to my pain!”

Ouch, he doesn’t seem happy about it at all. Whedon has been screwed around by Studios before, with the cancellation of the very awesome and very loved ‘Firefly’, but he appears to be taking this news quite personally.

Well whether we like it or not it’s going to happen. All we can hope for is that maybe by some miracle the movie will re-imagine itself as a cult icon on its own and surprise us all. Or it could just make a hell of a lot of money. Despite the many objections there are a lot of curious people who are willing to give this movie a try, curious mainly in the casting choices they will make but who would be a good Buffy besides Sarah Michelle Gellar?

Regardless we will have to wait and see what the future has in store for our favorite sassy vampire slayer. Let us just hope that we won’t need to be there at the premiere with our stakes up ready to attack.

Let us know what you think.
