The Hobbit Already Short-listed for Oscar

Yes, you read that right: The Hobbit has already joined nine other films on the short-list of Oscar contenders!  No, it’s not for Best Picture…you presumptuous fiend!

Sci-Fi / Fantasy film nerds should be happy: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey  and The Dark Knight Rises have made it onto the short list of contenders for Best Visual Effects at the 85th Acadmey Awards. The films join a list of 10 remaining hopefuls including The Amazing Spiderman,  Cloud Atlas,  John Carter,  Life of Pi,  The Avengers,  Prometheus,  Skyfall  and Snow White and the Huntsman.

Those lucky members of the Academy’s visual effects branch will get to view a ten minute excerpt of each film in early January, from which they will make their final list of five films to be considered for the golden statue.

Nominees will be announced January 10, with the ceremony to be held February 24.

Sian's love for movies spawned from having a tight mother whose generosity stretched only to hiring movies once a week for entertainment. As a pre-teen Sian spent more pocket money then she earned on cinema tickets and thus sought a job at the cinema. Over the next decade she rose to be one of the greats in her backwater, six-screen cinema complex, zooming through the ranks from candy bar wench with upselling superpowers, to pasty projectionist, to a manager rocking a pencil skirt. Sian went on to study Journalism at university though feels her popcorn shovelling days were far more educational
