Some adventures are simply too good to leave buried. Universal Pictures has officially unveiled the title of its next Mummy adventure, and Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are heading back into action as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell.
The long-awaited sequel is officially titled The Mummy: Book of the Dead and is scheduled to arrive in US cinemas on 15 October 2027.
More than 25 years after their last adventure together, Fraser and Weisz are reuniting for another chapter in one of Hollywood’s most beloved action-adventure franchises.
The Mummy: Book of the Dead Reunites Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz
For fans of the original films, the biggest draw is undoubtedly the return of Rick and Evelyn O’Connell.
Fraser first played the adventurous Rick O’Connell in Stephen Sommers’ 1999 blockbuster The Mummy, opposite Weisz as the intelligent and occasionally accident-prone Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan.
Their on-screen chemistry helped turn the film into a box office hit and established a franchise that blended supernatural horror, spectacular action and plenty of humour.
The pair returned for 2001’s The Mummy Returns, but Weisz did not appear in the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, released in 2008. Maria Bello took over the role of Evelyn for that instalment.
Now, Fraser and Weisz are finally back together as the characters audiences remember.
The new film is reportedly being developed as a continuation of the first two adventures, with the events of the third instalment set aside.
Who Is Returning for The Mummy: Book of the Dead?
Rick and Evelyn won’t be the only familiar faces returning to the franchise.
John Hannah is back as Evelyn’s brother Jonathan Carnahan, while Oded Fehr returns as Ardeth Bay.
Kevin J. O’Connor, who memorably portrayed Beni Gabor in the original 1999 film, is also returning.
The cast additionally includes Michael Johnston and Numan Acar, whose characters have not yet been officially detailed.
Some familiar names returning raise intriguing possibilities, particularly given where their characters’ stories ended in the earlier films. However, Universal is keeping the actual plot firmly under wraps.
The Directors Behind Ready or Not and Scream Take Over
Directing The Mummy: Book of the Dead are Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known collectively as Radio Silence.
The pair previously directed Ready or Not, Scream (2022), Scream VI and Abigail.
It’s an interesting choice for a franchise that has always balanced supernatural horror with old-fashioned adventure. Their experience combining suspense, humour and energetic action could prove a natural fit for the O’Connells’ return.
The screenplay comes from David Coggeshall, whose previous credits include Orphan: First Kill and The Family Plan.
Longtime franchise producer Sean Daniel is also involved, alongside producers from Project X Entertainment.
What Does the Book of the Dead Mean?
Although Universal hasn’t revealed the storyline, the title will certainly sound familiar to fans of the original film.
In 1999’s The Mummy, the Book of the Dead was an ancient Egyptian text capable of bringing the dead back to life.
It played a crucial role in the accidental resurrection of Imhotep, setting Rick, Evelyn and their companions on a dangerous adventure through Egypt.
Whether the mysterious book will once again awaken an ancient evil remains to be seen.
And while the title offers an obvious connection to the franchise’s Egyptian mythology, it’s too early to say exactly what threats the O’Connells will face this time.
A Return to the Original Mummy Adventures
The new sequel arrives after Universal’s attempt to relaunch the property with Tom Cruise in 2017.
That version of The Mummy was intended to launch the studio’s interconnected Dark Universe, but those plans never developed into the cinematic franchise originally envisioned.
Rather than another complete reinvention, The Mummy: Book of the Dead brings back the stars and characters who helped make the original films so popular.
For Fraser, the project also marks a return to one of his signature roles following his Academy Award-winning performance in The Whale.
There’s still plenty we don’t know, including the identity of the central villain and how the story will reconnect with the original films.
But with Fraser and Weisz reunited, familiar supporting characters returning and a new filmmaking team taking charge, this adventure already has plenty going for it.
When Is The Mummy: Book of the Dead Coming to Cinemas?
The Mummy: Book of the Dead is scheduled for release in US cinemas on 15 October 2027.
An Australian theatrical date has yet to be confirmed separately.
Production is underway, although Universal has not yet released an official trailer or detailed plot synopsis.
For longtime fans, the prospect of seeing Rick and Evelyn O’Connell together again is reason enough to be excited.
After all these years, the O’Connells are finally returning to the adventure.
