This Week At The Luna Outdoor (1-6 Jan)

Happy New Year, Accessreelers!

If you’re in the lovely Western Australian city of Perth, then Luna Outdoor is the place to see movies outside in the cool of the evening. Luna Outdoor begins 2024 with the new Nicolas Cage film Dream Scenario.

From writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and producer Ari Aster (Hereditary, Beau is Afraid) comes this Kafkaesque parable of fame and its discontents, featuring a career-high performance from Nicolas Cage.

Dream Scenario tells the bizarre tale of evolutionary biologist and hapless family man Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) whose quiet life of lecturing bored college students about the behaviours of ants is suddenly and strangely upended when he starts inexplicably appearing in other people’s dreams.

He has no idea why so many people who have never met or even seen him begin encountering him in their subconsciousness, nor can he control it. But once it becomes clear that Paul’s nocturnal appearances are something of a global phenomenon, he’s all too ready to embrace the attention that comes with them, appearing on talk shows for interviews and (much like the real life Nicolas Cage) becoming something of a meme.

However, when his appearances start to take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to reckon with what it means to lose complete control over your public persona, with terrifying repercussions.

“Is this a fantasy? A fable? A new kind of horror movie? Actually, “Dream Scenario” is all of the above and then some…” Variety

“Cage is comedy gold in one of the year’s sharpest comedies yet.” Hollywood Reporter

“Dream Scenario is simply the best absurdist comedy of its kind since Anomalisa.” indieWire

“An ambitious, often provocative interrogation of masculinity, cancel culture, social media, and the power of celebrity.” Screen International

“Cage slowly develops Paul’s sense of moral outrage and disconnect from the standards of the world… It’s a performance that ranks with some of Cage’s best.”Austin Chronicle
